The campaign of one.

For your entire life, every ad you have ever seen was made for someone else.

The car commercial with the family in the mountains was not made for you. It was made for a household income bracket and a postal code cluster, and you happened to fall inside both. The asset was built once, at cost, and pushed to everyone in the bucket. You were a rounding error inside a target group.

That arrangement was not a choice. It was a budget constraint. Producing one asset cost tens of thousands of dollars. Producing one for every potential customer would have cost more than any campaign could earn back.

AI takes the production constraint away.

Imagine generating an asset specifically for one person — referencing what they like, where they have been, what they bought last, what they are working on — for roughly what producing a stock image cost a decade ago.

With AI it will be possible to create ads just for you. Tuned to your taste. Your political views. Your lived experiences.

The campaign for one.

This is not personalisation. Personalisation was swapping the first name into a templated email. What AI will make possible is something else: the asset itself, generated for one person, referencing things only that person would recognise.

The strange part is what it will do to the reader. An ad made for a segment feels like an ad. An ad made for you, specifically, referencing things you actually care about, does not feel like an ad. It feels like a gift, or like surveillance, depending on how it is done.

That is the line every brand will have to find. Concierge or creep. Made for me or made about me. The technology does not pick the side. The brand does.

The ad you'll see in the future will be one created for you. You will not be sure whether to be flattered, or to be afraid.
